Hermann Ottó tanítványa és munkatársa volt. 1896-tól 1935-ig az Ornitológiai Központ, illetve a Madártani Intézet kutatója, 1922 után igazgatója. 1935-ben nyugalomba vonult és Ábrahámhegyen telepedett le. Halála után a faluszéli házban a Madártani Intézet segítségével kis múzeumot hoztak létre, amely a hatvanas évek végén megszűnt. Tanulmányai főleg az Aquila c. folyóiratban jelentek meg. Világviszonylatban is kiváló madárillusztrátorként tartják számon. Rajzai díszítik HERMAN Ottó: A madarak hasznáról és káráról c. népszerű könyvét. Kiadta Petényi Salamon János hátrahagyott iratait. Gyűjteményének egy része a Madártani Múzeumba került. Madárillusztrációinak jelentős része 1945-ben elégett.
