Visszatérve 1906-1908-as években a Képzőművészeti Főiskolán Ferenczy Károly és Szinyei Merse Pál tanítványa. Az 1. világháború után Badacsonyban telepedett le, számtalan helyen és témában festette meg a Balatont. Berlinben, Drezdában, Hamburgban és Szicíliában járt tanulmányúton. 1938-ban a Képzőművészek Új Társasága (KUT) elnökévé választották. A 20-as évektől csaknem kizárólagos témája a Balaton. Először a expresszionizmus formanyelvén fejezi ki magát, majd egyéni stílust teremt. Olajpasztell festésű képei szuggesztív látomásban egyesítik az embert és a természetet. Számos képét a Magyar Nemzeti Galériában őrzik, munkái megtalálhatók veszprémi, pécsi és keszthelyi múzeumokban, valamint magángyűjteményekben. Az Ernst-díjat 1924-ben, a Szinnyei-tájképdíjat 1926-ban nyerte el. 1948-ban elsők között kapta meg a Kossuth-díjat. Badacsonyban az emlékmúzeuma udvarán álló bronz mellszobrát Borsos Miklós, a kikötő bejáratánál lévő egészalakos szobrát, Marton László készítette.
