Az Írószövetség egyik megalapítója. Parasztpárti politikusként 1945–1947-es években vallás- és közoktatásügyi miniszter. Költőként a Nyugat nemzedékére jellemző kifinomult stílus, a sokoldalú és megalapozott műveltség jellemzi munkásságát. Zalaegerszegen született ugyan, de családi kapcsolatai és gyermekkori emlékei Nemesgulácshoz kötötték, 1918-tól ezt a falut tekintette otthonának. Évente több hetet töltött Balatonfüreden, ahol gyógykezeltette magát. Sok írása jelent meg Veszprém megyei újságokban és folyóiratokban, az utóbbi években főként az Új Horizontban. Vörösberényben, a Balaton Akadémia folyosóján bronz mellszobra (Sigmond Olivér alkotása) látható. 1996-ban Balatonfüred díszpolgárává választották. 1998. augusztus 6-ától, a Balatoni Panteonban tábla őrzi emlékét. 1968-ban József Attila-díjat, 1978-ban Állami Díjat, Kossuth-díjat és Széchenyi-díjat kapott.
