Századunk egyik legnagyobb madártani szakértője. A Fővárosi Piarista Gimnázium befejezése után a budapesti egyetem jogi karán 1932-ben szerzett doktori címet, majd a bölcsészkaron 1935-ben avatták bölcsészdoktorrá. A budapesti tudományegyetemen 1946-ban madártanból magántanárrá habilitált. 1934-től kisebb megszakításokkal a Madártani Intézet munkatársa. 1948–1949-ben a Mezőgazdasági Múzeumot vezette. A Madártani Intézetből ment nyugdíjba, majd haláláig nyugdíjasként a Magyar Természettudományi Múzeum munkatársa. Legszívesebben rendszertani kérdésekkel foglalkozott, de a hazai madár faunisztikai kutatások terén is kimagasló eredményeket ért el. Tevékenységét félezernél is több tudományos és népszerűsítő publikáció fémjelzi. Első madártani témájú közleményeinek egyike (A biotópok jelentősége a madarak vonulásánál – Magy. Biol. Kut. Munk., 1938. 10:) a Balatonhoz, főleg Tihany környékéhez kötődik. A rendszeres Balaton-kutatást 1941-ben kezdte, és szinte élete végéig folytatta. A Bakony természeti képe program egyik alapító tagja és aktív résztvevője volt.
