A húszas évek közepétől jelentkezett útirajzokkal, történelmi tanulmányokkal, művelődéstörténeti cikkekkel. Dolgozott a Nyugatnak, a Magyar Nemzetnek alapításától munkatársa. 1948-ban kizárták az Írószövetségből, 1956 után csak álnéven írt munkái jelenhettek meg. 1960-ig a magyar Pen Club főtitkára volt. Művelődéstörténeti regényei eredeti forrásokra támaszkodnak, hitelesen ábrázolják a kort és az eseményeket. Később történelmi témájú regényei is nagy sikert arattak. Görög, német, olasz, portugál és spanyol nyelvből fordított. Esőisten siratja Mexikót c. 1939-ben megjelent történelmi regénye hozta meg számára a népszerűséget. Az 1950-es évektől több ízben a füredi Lipták ház vendége. 1958-ban telket vásárolt Tihanyban, nyaralót épített. Tihanyi házában töltötte a nyári hónapokat, itt írta a Ravennában temették Rómát c. regényét is. Sírja a balatonarácsi r. k. temetőben van.
