A szerzetesi életformát nehezen viselte, szenvedélyes természete sok összeütközésbe sodorta. Veszprémben és más városokban teológiát tanított, Bécsben rajzot és műépítészetet tanult. 1778-ban szentelték pappá Nagyváradon, ahol először rajztanító, majd az akadémia bölcselettanára. Később többfelé is tanított, közben egy esztendeig Pozsonyban szerkesztette a Magyar Hírmondót, az első magyar nyelvű hírlapot. Bécsben rajzra tanította Széchenyi Istvánt, 1802-től a budapesti egyetem tanára. Szabadelvű vallási felfogása és lelkes hazafisága miatt sok üldöztetésben volt része. A magyar nyelvtudomány egyik legnagyobb alakja, az első rendszeres magyar stilisztika szerzője. Kapcsolatát Veszprémmel soha nem szüntette meg. A keszthelyi származású Péteri Takács József ekkor már Veszprémben élt, Révai élete vége felé őt tette meg művei örökösévé. Péteri Takács Hertelendy és Hornyik kanonokok támogatásával 1806-ban megjelentette Elaboratior Grammatica Hungarica c. alkotását. 1799–1800-ban Balatonfüreden gyógyítatta magát.<br /> <br /> ==Művei==<br /> <br /> *A régi magyar írásmód és a Magyar szép toll.
